The semi-final match between India and Pakistan was played in Mohali. Shoaib Akhtar said that the memories of Mohali haunt him even today. In his interview on Sportskeeda, the former fast bowler said, ‘The memory of Mohali haunts me… 2011 World Cup semi-final. I should have fed them. This was completely unfair on the part of the team management. I knew I had only two matches left and it was my wish to raise the Pakistan flag at the Wankhede. I knew India was under tremendous pressure. The whole country and the media was looking up to the team. We were underdogs. That’s why I believed that we should not have taken the pressure.
Gets Sachin-Sehwag out
Pakistan did not give a chance in that match by calling Shoaib Akhtar unfit. To prove his fitness, he bowled 8 consecutive overs during practice, but it also did not help. He says that he would have taken the wickets of Sachin and Sehwag in that match. Akhtar said, ‘I was told that I am unfit. But I bowled eight consecutive overs during practice. If I had played that match, the result could have been anything. I would have got Sachin and Sehwag out. Then the Indian innings would have collapsed.
He continued, ‘I was really sad. I am not the kind of person who cries but I am the kind of person who breaks things. I broke a few things in the dressing room. I knew only the first 10 overs mattered.
Was out after taylor’s thrashing
In the 24th match of the 2011 World Cup, Ross Taylor of New Zealand had beaten Shoaib Akhtar fiercely. Akhtar had hit three sixes and three fours in his last over. That’s why he didn’t get a chance to play again.
