Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is counted among the most aggressive captains. He not only took Team India to the heights under his captaincy, but also recognized the talent of all the players like Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni in his leadership and gave them opportunities at the international level. Despite batting in the top order and leading Team India for a long time, there was no news of any controversy with fellow players like Sachin Tendulkar or Rahul Dravid.
The current BCCI chief discussed this at an event organized by the Economic Times India Leadership Council. He never tried to compete with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin or Rahul Dravid. He said, ‘There is a difference between a captain and a leader. There is a difference in how you made the seniors and the youth believe in your leadership.
Ganguly said- Captaincy on the field and preparing the team, both were different for me. Whether I worked with Sachin, Azhar or Dravid, I didn’t compete with them. Instead I collaborated with them and shared the responsibility. Ganguly, who is still regarded as one of India’s best captains, said that he has played with great players who could have captained the country at any time.
He said- I have seen the real change of cricket with time. There were people with different mindsets and I realized long ago that there was no dearth of talent within the team. But talent is nothing without risk. I had some great players with me who could become captain at any time. I am fortunate to have got a chance to play with those great players.
