New Delhi: The media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) were sold after an auction that lasted for three days. This super auction made Indian cricket rich. These media rights, distributed in four packages, were sold for Rs 48 thousand 390 crore. That is, from 2023 to 2027, BCCI will get this money in lieu of showing IPL on TV and mobile. In terms of the cost of a match, the Indian Premier League has now become the second most expensive sporting event in the world. IPL is the second most expensive league in the world after the National Football League (NFL). It is no small matter to beat the old and prestigious world wide tournaments like English Premier League (EPL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) in the media rights. 48,390 crore will be mainly divided into two parts. Half the money will be divided among the 10 franchises of the tournament, but the 8 old teams i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) will have a bigger share while both new franchise champions Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants will have a smaller share.

Indian cricket board will keep half the money
The Indian Cricket Board will keep half of 48 thousand 390 crores i.e. 24 thousand 195 crores. This money will be spent on strengthening the foundation of cricket in the country. The money will be given to players, staff and state cricket associations. Till last year this model used to be different. Of this half, 70 per cent money was given to the state boards. Four per cent was distributed to the staff in the IPL and 26 per cent among various domestic and international players.

Who won which rights?

The TV rights for the Indian subcontinent were bought by Disney Star for Rs 23575 crore (Rs 57.5 crore per match), but the digital rights went to Reliance’s Viacom 18 for Rs 20,500 crore. Viacom also bought a C package of ‘non-exclusive’ rights for Rs 2991 crore. The A and B packages include 410 matches over the next five years (74–74 matches in 2023 and 2024, 84 matches in 2025 and 2026 and 94 matches in 2027). Package C included the rights to 18 ‘non-exclusive’ matches, which Viacom18 bought for Rs 2991.6 crore i.e. Rs 33.24 crore per match. There are 90 matches in this package. Package D contained overseas TV and digital rights that Viacom18 and Times Internet bought for Rs 1,300 crore.
